Quoting
What do you need to quote a coating job?
A drawing or sketch of the part, the base material, the quantity and when you need the parts. If you have a coating specification, include it: the process, material and thickness, plus the finish and tolerances if we are grinding or lapping. If you don’t have one, tell us how the part is used and we will recommend a coating and process. You can attach all of that to the quote form as PDF, DWG, DXF, STEP, JPG or PNG files up to 25 MB.
Can you recommend a coating?
Yes. If your drawing or specification names a coating, we apply that. If it doesn’t, tell us about the part, how it is used and what has been tried before, and we will recommend a coating and process from the ones we run.
Is my drawing kept confidential?
Yes. Drawings and specifications are seen only by the staff who quote and run your job, and are never shared outside the company. We can sign a non-disclosure agreement before you send anything. See our privacy policy.
Do you have a capabilities sheet?
Yes, a one-page PDF summary of our processes, materials and finishing capacities: download the capabilities sheet.
Coatings
Which thermal spray processes do you run?
Five, all in our Allentown shop: HVOF, HVAF, plasma spray, twin-wire arc and combustion flame spray, and fused (spray-and-fuse) coatings. The coatings overview compares them.
What materials can you apply?
Tungsten carbide, chrome carbide, oxide ceramics such as chromium oxide and alumina, abradables, and metals and alloys including stainless steels, nickel and cobalt alloys, bronze, copper, aluminum and zinc. The coating materials page lists them by group.
How large a part can you coat?
We coat large parts, inside and out, from shafts and rolls to vessels, and we have an outside tailgate dock and drive-in loading doors for them. Include the part dimensions and weight with your quote request and we will confirm.
Can you rebuild a worn part to size?
Yes. Dimensional repair coatings restore worn shafts, sleeves, housings and similar parts to their original size, and we grind them to the finished dimension in-house.
Is HVOF tungsten carbide a replacement for hard chrome plating?
For many wear applications, yes. HVOF and HVAF carbide coatings are harder than hard chrome and are applied without the hexavalent chromium used in plating. Our article on chrome carbide as an alternative to hard chrome covers the comparison.
Machining and finishing
Do you machine and finish the coated parts?
Yes. Our machining and finishing shop does CNC machining, diamond grinding, lapping and super finishing, so a part can come in raw and leave coated, ground and ready to install.
What surface finish and tolerance can you hold?
Lapped carbide coatings reach a 1 Ra finish, ceramics can be lapped to 4 Ra, and ground parts are held to .0001″ on diameter. Flat lapping goes to 12-millionth-inch flatness.
